New Webinar: New Home Education Decision of the High Court

November 16th, 2021 by 11KBW Blogs

Date: Tuesday 23rd November 2021

Time: 10:00-11:00

Speakers: Paul Greatorex & James Cornwell

The High Court has today handed down judgment in the case of Goodred v Portsmouth City Council which concerns the duties of a local authority where parents elect to home educate their children.  Such parents have a duty to ensure that this education is suitable and local authorities are primarily responsible for policing this duty but there is very little case law in this area (indeed this was the first judgment in the area from the higher courts for several decades).  This decision provides guidance to parents and local authorities in this area, including on their respective duties under sections 7 and 436A of the Education Act 1996.  Paul Greatorex represented the local authority and James Cornwell represented the Secretary of State for Education who intervened in the claim, and both will be speaking about the decision and its implications as well as home education generally.

The webinar is free of charge.
